OLD LONDON BRIDGE

It is said that London Bridge was made for wise men to go over and fools to go under. Not so the present modern construction, nor its predecessor, but the nineteen arched medieval bridge of stone and wood which supported a thriving community of shops, houses and even a church. Built in 1170, this bridge spanned the River Thames for 600 years and replaced a succession of wooden structures going back to the Roman invasion.

London Bridge in all its forms has captured the imagination of artists and writers for centuries. Its reputation and fascination, though, is well deserved, because without it, London would not have existed
